PALESTINA - tragedy and hope
in the 21sst century

“PALESTINA: Tragedy and Hope in the 21st Century” by artist and historian Marcelo Guimarães Lima.
Overview
In
our present time, the ongoing Palestinian genocide is a human-made
disaster of global proportions and long term consequences. The condition
to reflect about and to represent this kind of human tragedy is to be
able to face the horrors of war and genocide that defy our sense of
humanity without being overwhelmed or paralyzed in our hearts and minds.
Art can help us to confront inhumanity, human cruelty and barbarism as
such, without masking illusions, by preserving our capacity for empathy,
for self-reflection and subjective autonomy.
In artistic
reflection and representation, our direct emotional reaction becomes
part of an active response, not just a momentary, passive feeling. It
allows us to look into the eye of tragedy without succumbing to despair
and violence. It allows us to counter those who deny our common
humanity.
