Art and the Environment

Marcelo Guimarães Lima

“Science manipulates things and refuses to inhabit them,” wrote the philosopher Merleau-Ponty (1), reflecting on the questions, difficulties, and limits of the instrumental conception of contemporary science. In contrast, we can state that art is, from its origins, as a vital initiative, the action of building and rebuilding the world in order to inhabit it, of making the world a home, an extended familiar territory, both preserved and renewed. This implies the reciprocal adaptation of the subject to the environment in a context of closeness and identification with reality, both actual and symbolic. It offers a means of creating a “democracy of all that exists,” one that preserves the proximity and identities of things and beings in a common territory, while broadening them through free communication, exchanges, conjunctions, and even clashes.
